THREE things we did not know about Australia:

  1. It is a country founded by Delinquents! In the late 1700s British colonisers arrived in New South Wales to set up a British penal colony. Australia Day on 26th January celebrates the first arrival of prisoners to Port Jackson. The joke was definitely on them!
  2. The Great Barrier Reef is the size of Texas and can be seen from space. It is the world’s largest coral reef system and spans 1,400miles. Climate change is the biggest threat to coral reefs globally.
  3. Vegemite is banned in some Australian prisons! Officials claim that the dark brown paste made from left over brewer’s yeast can be used to make alcohol.
  4. There are more kangaroos than people! Australia is the world’s most sparsely populated country with 24 million residents however, there are twice that amount of kangaroo and three times that amount of sheep!
