Australia: Fraser Island (1995)

K'gari, also known as Fraser Island, is a World Heritage-listed island along the south-eastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region, Queensland, Australia. The island is approximately 250 km north of the state capital, Brisbane, and is within the Fraser Coast Region local government area.

🙂 Silicone beach. Dingo’s

🙁 You cannot swim in the sea – strong currents and lots of sharks!

Headed from Gympie to Fraser Island by bus and caught the ferry in time. Fraser Island features complex dune systems that are still evolving, and an array of rare and unique features in this sand environment, including dune lakes and tall rainforests. Swam in Lake McKenzie which was crystal clear – cleaned jewellery in the silicone sand. We enjoyed a bush walk. Dranks loads of champagne at lunch!

The shipwreck was interesting. During her final journey from Melbourne to Japan where she was set to be scrapped, a cyclone struck, leaving the Maheno adrift in the ocean off the east coast of Australia. She eventually beached on K’gari (Fraser Island) two days later, where she still remains today. Fraser Island has claimed many ships with 23 wrecks recorded in Fraser Island (K’Gari) waters between 1856 and 1935!
