Australia: Cairns, Green Island, Diving, Atherton Tablelands 1995

Green Island and its surrounding waters are an important and protected marine park. Filled with vibrant bird and coral reef marine life, there is much to explore, and find out what makes the resort one of the most eco-friendly in the world. The Tablelands (or Atherton Tablelands) is a highland region of northern Australia near Cairns, Queensland. The landscape's mix of rainforest, wetlands and savanna is home to numerous birds and wildlife like tree kangaroos and wallabies.

🙂 Barrier Reef!

🙁 Damaged coral

We were collected at 07h00 and transferred to the Marina for our ferry to Green island. Hundreds of Japs kept photographing us. Called Any & Libby to congratulate them on baby – who they call Helmut! LOL. Sea was rough and arrived feeling rather green and sea sick. Disappointed as very touristy and coral damaged. Cloudy but warm. It must have been beautiful before being exploited. Had lunch, walked around the island and saw sting rays. Lots of black tipped sharks. Trent at least enjoyed the day…

Headed to a croc pit – rather nervous as one seemed to lock onto us! Ferry back home and an early night

The next morning it was another early start – found SeaQuest II yacht at Marina and boarded with Dave and Terry. Weather better and much calmer than previous day. Coral stunning, shallow reef just past Green Island. Trent snorkelled with us – lots of sharks. Good two dives but incompetent Divemaster.

Wen to drive inn that evening to see Forrest Gump – sobbed our hearts out and Paul officially proposed after ‘My Jenny’ died…lol. Next film was Junior which was a bit rubbish. We then drove to find a spot to park the camper for the night near the beach. We were kept awake by constant headlights passing us at midnight. Then there was a flashing blue light and a policeman knocked on our door. Took our passports etc… then they left. Then we were woken gain at 04h00 by Council Security who told us to move – a headless, freshly killed body had been found right here …. why did the Police not tell us!!! We moved to an estate like neighbourhood and slept there!

Picked up letters in Cairns: Scathing letter from Denise, angry letter from Nancy and funny letter from Glen. Headed to Atherton Tablelands. Stopped at volcanic crater and waterfalls – beautiful rainforest surroundings. The Tablelands (or Atherton Tablelands) is a highland region of northern Australia near Cairns, Queensland. The landscape’s mix of rainforest, wetlands and savanna is home to numerous birds and wildlife like tree kangaroos and wallabies. The region encompasses the Waterfalls Circuit, a 17km driving loop that includes Millaa Millaa Falls, where the forested setting is a favourite of photographers.
