Australia: Ayers Rock / Uluru (2011)

Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of the Northern Territory’s arid "Red Centre". The nearest large town is Alice Springs, 450km away. Uluru is sacred to indigenous Australians and is thought to have started forming around 550 million years ago. It’s within Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which also includes the 36 red-rock domes of the Kata Tjuta (colloquially “The Olgas”) formation.

🙂 Magnificent scenery!! Amazing flight! UFO in flight to Ayers Rock!

🙁 It is recommended not to climb Ayers Rock as it is sacred to the Aboriginals. On the basis that we climbed in in 1995 this was not a problem.

We flew into Ayers Rock from Perth. During the flight Paul and Caitlyn saw a UFO – Paul thinks it must have been Richard Branson’s prototype…. interesting…

On arrival we hired a car and headed for our fixed flight across Ayers Rock and the Olgas – it was awe inspiring.

What a great experience! We headed off and checked into Ayers Rock Campground Cabin and drove to Ayers Rock to catch sunset. It glowed! STUNNING.

Our cabin was small but comfortable. We cooked a steak and mash for dinner.

The next morning we were headed to a Ayers Rock for sunrise – spectacular! Lovely walk around the base of Ayers Rock … the Aboriginal Rock paintings were especially interesting.

A deeply spiritual place….
