Australia: Devil’s Marbles – Alice Springs – Kings Canyon (1995)

Watarrka National Park is only three hours’ drive from Uluru, and is home to the mighty Kings Canyon – a majestic destination featuring 300m high sandstone walls, palm-filled crevices, and views that stretch across the desert. The Kings Canyon Rim walk is a 6km circuit that will take you down into the Garden of Eden, a beautiful rockhole surrounded by rare plants, before ascending to 360° panoramic views over the red sand dunes. Stunning.

🙂 Stunning and spectacular.

🙁 HOT! Shredded tyres!

After leaving Kakadu we had breakfast at 3 Ways. Devil’s Marbles were very cool – we spotted a dingo!

We were up early and showered and drove into Alice from Devils Marbles. We drove to the Telegraph Station and spotted kangaroos. Took a short walk on the river bed and back to van to eat some sandwiches. We looked at some Abo art and bought Trent a boomerang and ourselves a didgeridoo. We stopped off at a meteorite crater and did a walk and picked up loads of meteorite (later discovered it was not! lol).

Drove to Kings Canyon and on arrival got chatting to a lovely family who invited us to sit around the fire with them. Made dinner and did some schooling with Trent. Drank a glass of wine, 2 beers and a tot of Kahlua – quite tipsy!

Up early and showered and planned our walk. Met up with David, Cathy, Paul and Michael and walked into Canyon. They were dentists on a sabbatical and travelling through Australia. The rim is amazing – sheer drops and cliffs with amazing scenery. Trent loved the walk and engaged with the other children and was very happy – we were a bit worried that they would fall off the edge! We tried to catch lizards which were basking in the sun. After the walk we headed to the campsite and had a well earned swim.
