SA: Kwa Zulu Natal – Izungla & Surrounding areas

KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal South African province, is known for its beaches, mountains and savannah populated by big game. The safari destination Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, in the northeast, is home to black and white rhinos, lions and giraffes. Durban is an Indian-influenced harbor city and a popular surfing spot. Cultural villages around the town of Eshowe showcase the traditions of the indigenous Zulu people. DURBAN: My hometown - always in my heart.

🙂 Home. Wild. Wonderful. Durban to Umhlanga to Sodwana. Home is where the heart is.

🙁 Crime

Durban, a coastal city in eastern South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, is known for its African, Indian and colonial influences. Refurbished for soccer’s 2010 World Cup, the seafront promenade runs from uShaka Marine World, a huge theme park with an aquarium, to the futuristic Moses Mabhida Stadium. The Durban Botanical Gardens showcases African plant species – this was where I grew up – barefoot and on my bicycle until the sun set… a magnificent childhood!

We have visited the North Coast on several occasions.

In 2005 we stayed with Linda at her holiday home which she designed but has since sold: Izungla. It is divine. We relaxed immersed in nature and did lovely walks – bliss.

It was lovely for all the cousins to be together and for me to be reunited with my cousin and my Aunty Sylvia. We took a trip to Hluhluwe and had some great sightings.

Game was prolific. We had boys dancing outside the gates for tips.

The next day we headed to Cape Vidal for whale watching – the sea was pretty rough and I honestly thought Caits was going to go overboard – terrifying! We saw southern right whale and calf close to the boat – but no photos as I was tooo busy holding on for dear life!

The wetlands are stunning.

Loads of hippos and crocs on the boat tour.

That evening we did a private game drive and enjoyed sundowners and a delicious dinner at the lodge afterwards.

In 2007 we visited for Linda’s 50th birthday celebration at Izungla and St Lucia.

2009

We returned to visit Linda at Izungla in 2009. Walking on the property was incredible – we had giraffes mating behind us!!

We did a lovely side trip to Hluhluwe Game Reserve where we saw plenty of white rhino and other game.
