Tanzania: Zanzibar 1994 – New Year 1995

Zanzibar is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. On its main island, Unguja, familiarly called Zanzibar, is Stone Town, a historic trade center with Swahili and Islamic influences. Its winding lanes present minarets, carved doorways and 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace. The northern villages Nungwi and Kendwa have wide beaches lined with hotels

🙂 Wonderful Mitu Spice Tour!

🙁 “lost camera” !!

Hilarious flight from Kampala … “Captain Tinker at controls … just avoiding potholes” as we swerved across the runway – LOL! We actually landed at Zanzibar – which is where every single one of 150 passengers wanted to get off … so we all rioted … and the Big Momma Air Hostess closed the doors and would not let anyone off the plane and we took off again! LOL. To be fair – it was an international flight…

Landed in Dar and spent night in a hell hole. Vile breakfast and rude waiter.Left as soon as possible. Bought very expensive ferry tickets at $120 each!! Aargh! They would not sell us local rate outdoor tickets… ferry delayed by an hour but finally boarded and set off.. . sea sick!!! We had to lie flat on the outside $1 deck space with the locals – which is what we wanted in the first place! grrrr…

We had NOT thought ahead as we no longer looked at dates … it was Saturday 31 December 1994!! NEW YEAR! We could not find a hotel with Vacancies anywhere!! Finally we found a tout who took us to Sea View Inn – 7Kms out of town who had one room left (because it was so shit and small and no view) but we were grateful for a bed! Dinner was good – prawns and a bottle of wine and disco …

then headed to beach photographing hermit crabs while quite inebriated! Lost our camera… the whole hotel frantically searching for it as we were quite beside ourselves…they took it so seriously that they called the Police … who promptly found it on the beach near us…yikes – how embarrassing!!! Had plate of chips to sober up. Passed out during Paul’s 10 second countdown to midnight! LOL!

WELCOME 1995!

Up at 07h00 for breakfast – miracles do happen! Joined the famous Mitu Island Tour – it did not disappoint!! The ‘World According to Mitu”is a wonderful place! Loved his theories of life, love and the Universe! Hugely interesting trip – one can see why it is so in demand. From ‘nutmeg and mace’ to black pepper and cinnamon to jackfruit and star fruit and a plethora of spices – it was a delicious assault on the senses of smell, sight and taste – amazing!

ENORMOUS lunch which was delicious! I had my ankle painted with henna to get into the Zanzibar vibe!

Headed to the Old Town to this magnificent ice cream parlour n- OMG. Lemongrass / cashew nut /coffee flavoured ice creams – tried them all – divine… and the view is to die for…

Walked around the market tasting food .. what a fantastic place.

The next day was rainy but we did a walk enjoying the crabs, sea cucumbers etc… had lunch with a view and the best fish with coconut, garlic prawns and beer sYUM. Played Monopoly and Paul won so I was NOT happy….

That evening dinner at the iconic Fisherman Restaurant which did not disappoint – just divine. Tomato soup, Avacado, Lobster Thermidor, desert and coffee… AMAZING.

LOVED this island …wish we had more time to dive and stay longer but the Serengeti is calling ….
