New Zealand: Wellington – Kaikoura – Christchurch 1995

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, sits near the North Island’s southernmost point on the Cook Strait. A compact city, it encompasses a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour and colourful timber houses on surrounding hills. From Lambton Quay, the iconic red Wellington Cable Car heads to the Wellington Botanic Gardens. Strong winds through the Cook Strait give it the nickname "Windy Wellington." Kaikoura is a coastal town on the South Island of New Zealand. It’s known for its abundant wildlife and its sperm whale population. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway winds from the town centre to lookout points at Point Kean. Close by, the rock platforms are home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals. The 1800s Fyffe House is a cottage built on a foundation of whalebones, with displays on the town’s whaling past. Christchurch, known for its English heritage, is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Flat-bottomed punts glide on the Avon River, which meanders through the city centre. On its banks are cycling paths, the green expanse of Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens. In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes destroyed many of the historic centre's stone-built buildings.

🙂 Whales!

🙁 Rough crossing!

We were up bright and early and showered – FREEZING and hail! VERY expensive campsite! We were absolutely convinced that we saw a UFO – a bright round disc orange light – it was in the papers the next morning too… ??!!

Went to British High Commission to complete all required forms $365 each! NZ visa extension cost $60! Went to see whether we could get on a standby ferry crossing – it was rough and windy! hectic! Cars had been falling off the ferries due to the severe weather conditions!

Drove all the way from Picton to Kaikoura stopping for a fish and chips on the way. Boarded the early morning whale watching which was super expensive! $85 each and $60 for Trent!! But worth every minute! Saw 4 sperm whales breaching, blowing, tails … amazing… also saw plenty of the NZ fur seals – a fantastic outing and not too rough.

Drove on to Christchurch to stay with Lorel. Poor Avis not well. Lovely cosy room with heated blanket! Lovely to see Lorel. Went to doctor about my sunspot and booked dermatologist.

The next day headed into the City to site see and take photos. Delicious roast chicken for dinner. Chatted until 02h30!! Such a lovely warm and welcoming family.

Dermatologist concerned about skin cancer and sent samples off and told us not to travel far… Yikes.
