New Zealand: Auckland 1995

Auckland, based around 2 large harbours, is a major city in the north of New Zealand’s North Island. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.

🙂 Springboks beat All Blacks in Rugby World cup 🙂

🙁 Challenging road signs!

We landed at 08h00 from Mexico City via Los Angeles. During the course of the flight, unbeknown to us the Springboks had beaten the All Blacks in the World Cup rugby in SA…. Trent was wearing a Springbok rugby jersey and the NZ Immigration Official was NOT amused…. mumbled under his breath about cheating … I ket my cool and refrained from bursting into singing the South African National Anthem with pride!! 🙂

We managed to clear customs and headed off to collect our campervan rental which was only $39 per day! We had to wait a day so they put us up at the local backpackers which was really lovely and enjoyed tea and a sandwich. It did get noisy at night and Paul was still ill from hisordeal on the flight. We called Lorel and let her know that we were in town.

Trent was up at 04h30 and we tossed and turned until 07h30 then showered and had breakfast. It was freezing compared to Mexico! We watched a film in the Backpackers Cinema while Paul slept as still not well. Trent naughty. Browsed local camping shop . Made Glen and Alison a personalised wedding card. Then headed to Backpacker pub for a free beer and pancake. Another noisy night and Paul still unwell. Trent really misbehaving … campervan still not ready so back to Backpackers for free beer and sushi. Bought a NZ Maori fertility hook.

Up early and picked up by campervan lady who did the demo – all straight forward. Drove to Mount Ridley for great views of Auckland.

Paul was irritated by the lack of road signs! We struggled to find our way out of the city but soon found ourselves on deserted rural roads – stopped at a pub for a lovely lunch and headed onwards to Kai-Iwi campsite which was deserted. Found a gorgeous spot next to a lake and had a glass of wine with cheese on toast – very civilised.

Did a shop at Square 4 which was expensive! Had a good nights sleep feeling very excited for what the island would hold in store for us!
