Gulets (pronounced goo-lets) are wooden schooners that have been used for fishing and sponging around the Mediterranean for many years. The word ’gulet‘ is said to derive from the French goulette, or schooner. These two-masted wooden vessels, usually made from local pine, were long used for transport and fishing along the southern coasts of Turkey. Typically designed with a sharp bow, broad beam and rounded aft, these days they are designed and fitted with comfort and not trade in mind. Routes cover from Kuşadasi in the Aegean to Antalya on the Mediterranean coast.

Vietnam: Day 2 & 3 & 4 – Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay is the name of an area located in the east of Halong Bay Vietnam. Although it shares many similar geological characters with Halong Bay, Bai Tu Long Bay is considered as off the beaten tourist track with many deserted and pristine beaches, no less impressive karst mountains. The Bay has a rich biodiversity with two ecosystems: a tropical, moist, evergreen rainforest ecosystem; and a marine and coastal ecosystem. The area has scarcely seen any tourist development. A large number of guests, through online research, wish to visit the Bai Tu Long Bay because it is much less crowded than Halong Bay. The only disadvantage is that it does not have many grottos. The nearest place for a visit (Vung Vieng Fishing village) is at around 20 km from tourist port.

Gulets can explore parts of the coast that larger boats cannot – like tiny, floating, boutique hotels. Often known as 'Blue Cruises' in a nod to the sea and the sky which surround you, gulet cruises are a tantalising mix of tradition, luxury and sublime relaxation.... AMAZING!
