Philippines: Manila – Puerto Galera 1995

Puerto Galera is a town on the Philippine island of Mindoro. It’s known for its dive sites and beaches. The long curve of White Beach is backed by bars and resorts. Inland, a forest trail leads to secluded Talipanan Falls, and a hillside 9-hole golf course sits above the coast. Northeast, the waters off Sabang Beach teem with marine life and corals. Medio and Paniquian (Boquete) islands offer quieter beaches.

🙂 Best diving in world so far!

🙁 Dangerous dive master!

Our flight from Hong Kong to Manila was delayed by 4 hours so we each got $90 to spend at the airport – result! Finally landed in Manila with a smooth transition from the airport to our Pension which was cheap and very clean with great sea views – just perfect. Trent had been quite naughty. We were up early and bought Sikat bus and ferry tickets for P270x2. Arrived at Puerto Galera at 14h30. Tout sold us on Encenada Beach Resort – very nice! Enjoyed a beer with lunch. Walked to market and bought our nieces, Sarak and Rachel little t-shirts. Back to resort for swim and beach and shared a bottle of wine. Met diving chap and arranged our diving.

We were up really early and ready for our diving. First dive was not great viz and hyperventilated BUT 2nd dive was FANTASTIC! We did the Hole in the Wall and Pink Wall – incredible coral – just spectacular and fantastic viz! The colour of the corals were simply stunning and the prolific fish life amazing. We also snorkelled with Trent.

Left on boat for a beach BBQ which was great! One of the locals stole Paul’s beer! Paul got burnt and we generally all had too much sun!

Had a light snack when we got back and Trent fast asleep from day’s exertion. Had him babysat while we hit the town.

Took a boat to Sabang … on the way there hot a log in our boat in the dark! Arrived at a seedy Go-Go Bar! Rapidly moved on to a pub next door which seemed overrun with yobbish divers so moved on to the disco next door where we had a few dances before heading bace. The bioluminescence was incredible- so cool to see! We humans can witness this natural phenomenon when there is lots of bioluminescence in the water, usually from an algae bloom of plankton. The bioluminescent sea will glow when it’s disturbed by a wave breaking or a splash in the water at night.

We really enjoyed the laid back vibe of this resort and pristine beach and great food – one of our tope sites in the world to dive as reefs are also untouched.

Our ext stop was Manila / Bangkok / Kathmandu … very excited for the Himalaya ….
