Australia: Kakadu 1995

Kakadu National Park is an enormous, biodiverse nature reserve in Australia’s Northern Territory. With terrain encompassing wetlands, rivers and sandstone escarpments, it’s home to some 2,000 plant species and wildlife from saltwater crocodiles and flatback turtles to birds. Aboriginal rock paintings, dating to prehistoric times, can be viewed at sites such as Nourlangie, Nanguluwur and Ubirr.

🙂 Stunning water lilies

🙁 Mosquitoes!

Departed from Litchfield National Park and drove to Darwin and to Post Office. Short note from Oupa, Diving Certificate, Divrce Papers, Letter from Paul’s Mom, Birth Certificate and a fax from Chris & Rhona saying that Fiji is just too expensive for them and could we consider Hawaii a week later instead. We faxed back to say that would be fine but hat I would have to apply for my visa. Bought some art work and drove to Kakadu where we camped. WORST night ever – millions of mosquitoes everywhere! Trent slept in tent wrapped in a mosquito net and we slept in the van.

Up for an early swim as it was already hot. Set off to the Visitor Centre and had a walk. The lowlands were still flodoed and there were water lilies everywhere – quite beautiful. Did the circuit walk of Nourlangie Rock – stunning rock art. Burrunggui (sometimes spelled Burrunguy, previously called Nourlangie Rock) is located in an outlying sandstone formation of the Arnhem Land Escarpment. is best-known for its stunning collection of rock art that spans back centuries. The walls of the rock have been used as a shelter and a canvas for thousands of years, marking the spot where local tribes communicated with each other and drew out their stories and memories

We took the short 2Km, steep climb to the Mirray Look out and were rewarded with a spectacular 360 degree view of the north of the park… – then heavens opened and we got drenched!

We then joined a cruise on Alligator River and wetlands and saw loads of crocodiles close up as well as sea eagles – highly enjoyable. Unfortunately the film we had was sun damaged so the pics are not great.

We decided to check into a hotel for the night as the mosquito situation was simply unbearable. Budget room $30! Showered and splashed out on a nice meal – delicious avocado and salmon and chicken breasts stuffed with banana – Aboriginal menu apparently! We drank two bottles of wine! Slept very well!

Up at 08h30 for breakfasts. Wrote postcards to friends and family and lazed around the pool. Clear blue skies and very hot. Met some lovely people and chatted about options in Thailand and all their travels. Headed to bar for dinner with everyone and the owner of the boat cruise, Craig played Bat Out of hell for Trent on the Juke Box repeatedly! A very relaxing day but we drank far too much again and staggered back to our van as we had checked out of the hotel…did not notice whether mosquitoes bothered us! LOL.

Woke up with a hangover, bid farewell to everyone after a quick swim and hit the road. Made dinner at a picnic spot. Picked up a fax from Chris & Rhona at Katherine PO, changed tyres drove until until we got tired and then camped off the road.
