USA: Arizona, Grand Canyon 1995

The Grand Canyon in Arizona is a natural formation distinguished by layered bands of red rock, revealing millions of years of geological history in cross-section. Vast in scale, the canyon averages 10 miles across and a mile deep along its 277-mile / 445 Km length. Much of the area is a national park, with Colorado River white-water rapids and sweeping vistas.

🙂 AWE INSPIRING! Bucket List – Tick!

🙁 Wish we had time to hike down and spend some time at bottom

We arrived at Flagstaff Station via Amtrak Rail at 07h10 and took a bus to the Canyon. AWESOME.

We bought a Navajo Indian pottery souvenir which is the same as Paul’s Parents have, and signifies a long and happy union – as Paul’s parents have … and we will have 🙂 Bought Trent a quiver full of bows and arrows (which he lost 30mins later!). We took a shuttle to the west rim to get photos of Hopi Point. Spectacular but very touristy. Met two lovely Afrikaans ladies from Cape Town! Big Bucket List TICK.

It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a 2012 study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years.

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Tibet plummets to a depth of 5,381m, making it more than 3.2Km deeper than the Grand Canyon’s 1.857Km. The Tibetan canyon is also about 30 miles longer than the Grand Canyon.

Supai Village is located at the base of the Grand Canyon within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Inaccessible by road and with a population of just 208, it is the most remote community in the lower 48 states, and is the only place where mail is still delivered by pack mule
