Brighton is less than an hour from London by train and a laid back and bohemian place with lots of quirky places to eat. ABBA won the1974 Eurovision with ‘Waterloo’ in Brighton. The Duke of York Cinema in Brighton is the oldest cinema in Britain. Brighton is rumoured to have numerous lost tunnels but there is one from the Royal Pavilion to the museum and Dome today which you can still see. This was reputedly so the Prince Regent could move about Brighton without people seeing how overweight he had become!
The Royal Pavillion is definitely worth a visit. It is also known as the Brighton Pavilion, and is a Grade I listed former royal residence located in Brighton, England. Beginning in 1787, it was built in three stages as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became the Prince Regent in 1811, and King George IV in 1820.
The Brighton Pier was established in 1899, it was the third pier to be constructed in Brighton after the Royal Suspension Chain Pier and the West Pier, but is now the only one still in operation. It is managed and operated by the Eclectic Bar Group. 2003 was a catastrophic year for the West Pier. On 28th March the Pavilion was destroyed in an arson attack, and then on 11th May the Concert Hall, already seriously damaged in a huge storm the previous December, was also deliberately set on fire. Palace Pier is a 1,722ft long Victorian pier, located in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s 8 miles of coastline. With famous fish and chip restaurant, a range of hot food and drink concessions, fairground attractions, two arcades, plus Brighton’s biggest indoor soft play area – ‘Palace Play’ – Brighton Palace Pier makes it a day to remember but bring empty pockets!
