Mexico: Acapulco – 1995

Acapulco, a beach resort town on Mexico's Pacific coast, is set on a large bay backed by high-rises and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Made famous by the jet set in the 1950s and ’60s, it's known for its high-energy nightlife, beaches and golf. From its iconic La Quebrada cliff, professional divers plunge 40m into a small ocean cove every day and night.

🙂 GREAT food!!

🙁 Bit tired – not the tropical party paradise that we had expected!

Up at 04h30 in our little box room in NYC off `Times Square and hailed a taxi – it felt like we were in a Hollywood Movie – the City was stirring, the sewers stank and steamed …

Took the 07h00 to Chicago and then changed for flight to Mexico City. Enjoyed a quick Mexican lunch – quite unusual but lots of avocado – so very good! There were literally 100s of green VW taxis – so quirky! Grabbed one to the Bus Terminal and booked the next bus to Acapulco. Comfortable but cold due to air con …LONG day as only arrived at 20h00 – 5 hour journey and booked in Mama Helene’s which was near the beach and very welcoming. Headed out for a delicious seafood meal before falling into a deep sleep when we returned!

Up at 09h30 – enjoyed a cup of coffee which we were offered (but then had to pay for!). Walked a bit further to better beaches – not at all what we had expected as the water looked dirty …. It was hot and then it rained which relieved the humidity. Had a very expensive lunch – tourist turf! Walked along the beach front and did some shopping with the vendors there – little paper mache figures and a money box and a rug. Trent showed us a cut and told us he had been bitten by a dog that morning!! But he hadn’t told us – so we found a doctor and he had to have a jab. Went for dinner on the beach and were serenaded by Mexicans in sombreros – very lovely and excellent Mexican food! Beers about 50p! Put Trent to bed and played table tennis and got mercilessly beaten by Paul grrr… Paul made a note about the crazy taxi drivers in this area – they all have IDs in their vehicles which bear absolutely no resemblance whatsoever to the actual driver and they all appear to be on suicide missions!!

Up early and got Trent donuts and coffee for breakfast as he had been pestering us! Caught bus to another beac which had been recommended which was much cleaner and nicer. Relaxed on beach, enjoyed a beer and another excellent meal. Lazy day … but fun. Played table tennis again which is proving to cause trouble in paradise …

Up early and had donuts for breakfast again. All our cards had stopped working and we could not get hold of any banks. Really annoyed as we had planned to book a dive today. Wee shared McDonalds as no other money! Decided to take a local bus trip down the coast which cost next to nothing – very scenic and lovely to watch the world g by – we had a man with a guitar and a sombrero board the bus who serenaded all the passengers – very lovely… We went back to previous place that had served excellent food for dinner and paid with Visa which we were certain was going to be declined but thank goodness they used a manual clunk machine! Phew. Mama Helene also asked if we could pay her in the morning – Yikes!

Up early and headed to bank – thank goodness everything was sorted – there had been a fraud hold on our accounts. Phew. Paid Mama Helene. Had lunch. Lazed on beach. Went on a sunset cruise where Paul downed a beer – lots of fun!

We had enjoyed our stay here but it had not quite lived up to expectations – looks very tired and no longer in its heyday!

We headed back to Mexico City early the next morning.
