The Netherlands: Amsterdam – van Gogh Museum

No trip to this city is complete without stopping by the Van Gogh Museum where you can discover the world's largest collection of his works featuring masterpieces such as Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, Almond Blossom and The Bedroom.

🙂 van Gogh!!!

What an amazing way to spend the afternoon, immersed in Masterpieces… Van Gogh’s is a Museum and not an art gallery. It is very informative, giving an insight into what shaped Vincent van Gogh and how he reveals himself through his art. His eloquent letters to his brother, who supported him financially are read by an actor whom you listen to on headsets and which capture his life’s nuances: “I regard love – as I do friendship – not only as a feeling but chiefly as an action – and particularly when it involves working and is an effort, it has another side of fatigue and powerlessness. Where people love sincerely and in good faith, they are blessed I believe.”

It was during this his stay in the south of France in 1888 he broadened his subject matter to include series of olive trees, wheat fields and sunflowers. He suffered from psychotic episodes, neglected his physical health and drank heavily. In a rage and after a confrontation with Paul Gauguin he severed part of his own left ear. He suffered from depression and on 27 July 1890 he shot himself in the chest and died two days later from his injuries. During his lifetime he was considered a madman and a failure. Today his works are amongst the most expensive ever to have sold. I left feeling quite emotional and bought a fridge magnet of the Sunflowers.
