Vietnam: Can Dao Island

Con Dao Archipelago, also called Con Lon or Con Son, is an archipelago belonging to Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. It is about a one-hour fly from Ho Chi Minh City. Being known as "The hell on Earth," the island witnesses Vietnam's history of the colonial times and the sacrifice of many heroes.

🙂 Stunning Island. Great diving. Turtle nexting.

🙁 Short runway. Corruption affecting flights. Police closing ocean. rain!

Charlotte was heading home as she had commitments with her boyfriend and his family who she hadn’t seen for months while travelling. This meant Paul and I had a few days romantic break on Con Dao Island at the amazing Six Senses resort. The 50 spacious pool villas run along a mile of sandy beach, sheltered by the green forested hills behind and affording stunning vistas of the South China Sea. Accommodation ranges in size from single-level to duplex villas with one to four bedrooms. Celebrities including Madonna have enjoyed time here as well as Jeremy Clarkson while filming Top Gear. We ere welcomed with a delicious fruit juice and shown to our amazing beach villa.

A haven … the weather was so dreadful. The diving and the sea turtle egg laying overnight beach excursion that we had booked were cancelled – we were SO upset.

The next day we headed to the Con Dao Prison complex. The prison was built in 1861 by the French colonists to jail those considered especially dangerous to the colonial government.

Back at our ‘villa’ Pail had developed a bad tummy … all in all not going too well. We headed back and were offered shark fin soup on the ay back to Saigon….hmmmm … SO disappointed. Our flights were manipulated by the local mafia so that our arrival and departure times minimised our time on the island. Weather rubbish. Diving and turtle laying cancelled -0 which was the whole reason for the expense of coming her (if it had worked out this would be a very different report!! Ho Hum…
