Unforgettable experiences abound in Vietnam. Chaotic Hanoi and Saigon are best experienced on a moped to immerse yourself in the bustling culture. The spectacular Hai Van Pass switchbacks explored on a motorbike is liberating. The surreal limestones of Halong Bay need seen from the deck of a traditional junk is a dream come true. Hiking through the rice terraces of Sapa and enjoying a homestay with the Hmong is surreal. Immerse yourself in culture and clothing in Hue and relax on the beaches around Hoi An. Scenic Ha Gieng province is essential for the intrepid traveller. Con Dao Islands lure the Diver. Every moment is an adventure. Every Vietnamese person a delight.

After researching numerous blogs and vlogs I came up with a fantastic itinerary. I then worked with the wonderful Ngoc Nguyn from More Fun Travel based in Hanoi to ensure that all transfers were seamless and that we had a driver and a guide (her husband) for the North. Highly recommend Ngoc’s excellent services. She was so patient with me and the itinerary that I amended on a daily basis! We felt looked after every step of the journey.

THREE THINGS WE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT VIETNAM:

  1. Do NOT cross your fingers in Vietnam – it is considered an obscene gesture!
  2. Egg coffee (“ca phe trung”) is a unique way of drinking coffee in Hanoi – it originated in the 1940’s when milk was scarce and egg yolks provided a convenient replacement. It is served with the egg yolk whipped with the condensed milk – delicious!
  3. White skin is considered perfection. A tanned skin indicates that you are a labourer. You will see the ladies completely covered wearing hoodies and gloves.
