Malaysia: Tioman and Perhentian Islands

Tioman Island lies off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the South China Sea. It's a nature reserve, ringed by beaches. The area is known for its dive sites, which have corals, sea fans and sea sponges, as well as shipwrecks. The island is covered in tropical rainforests, home to butterflies, lizards and monkeys. On the east coast, the Juara Turtle Project is a hatchery that protects and studies sea turtles. Perhentian Islands are beautiful tropical islands in the South China Sea on the east coast of Malaysia. It is a perfect getaway with spectacular pristine beaches, crystal-clear water, rich marine life, and a great variety of things to do.

🙂 Great Diving.

TIOMAN Island – 15 Sep 1995

Up at 07h00 to leave Singapore on an air conditioned coach. Heavy rain. Bus bumpy and arrived in Mersing at about 11h45 where we headed to travel agent to book a ferry. Arrived in Tioman at 15h30. Checked into Mango Grove and went for a lovely long walk. Met a cute captive monkey who kindly de-flead us! LOL. Quite lovely being groomed! felt so sorry for the little fellow.

Went for a snorkel … saw turtles.

Enjoyed expensive food and a beer before going to bed.

We enjoyed a dive – saw puffer fish. Trent enjoyed a snorkel. We chilled on beach in hammocks before sleeping fitfully after a fun day in the sun.

The next day we dived again and met a nice Danish chap. Better coral and fish – Napoleon Wrasse and scorpion fish and turtle. Beautiful fan coral (as dive is named) – I dived without a wetsuit as so warm. Watched the sunset and had a delicious Thai dinner – lovely day.

Up at 06h00 and took boat back to shore – enjoyed pancakes. Met a lovely couple working in Hong Kong called Paul & Adele. I asked her to guard our seats when we went to toilet and she tried to steak them! So I had to be assertively insistent that they move when we got back – which they did…so annoying. Only arrived at 19h00 – all rooms filled so ended up with lousy box and no food – so ate at food market…. which was actually fantastic!

Perhentian Island – 17 Sep 95 to 22 Sep 95

We were up at 04h30 and walked to bus station to take the 05h30 to arrive at Kuala Besut at 07h00. All cats in area were manx!! Took a small boat to the Prehentian Islands – completely unspoilt and undeveloped with only a few small huts on the beach – amazing… Coral great and lovely fish life. Met Alistair from Durban who worked for Michael Pampallis at his law firm! Bitten to death by mosquitoes! Found a turtle hatchery and released them into the ocean – quite horrid to watch sea gulls take so many 🙁

Bought a Durian to taste – it really does stink of rotting meat but actually tastes ok!

We spent 4 days enjoying the peace of this island. We watched in amusement as locals loaded a boat with cement slabs … and the boat promptly sank! We met some great people and did a few more dives in pristine waters with sightings of reef sharks, moray eels, turtles and barracuda. Had our first beers in ages! What a lovely few days in paradise! Next stop after taking boat back to mainland was Thailand border!
