New Zealand: Queenstown – Wanaka – Cardrona Ski Field 1995

Queenstown, New Zealand, sits on the shores of the South Island’s Lake Wakatipu, set against the dramatic Southern Alps. Renowned for adventure sports, it’s also a base for exploring the region’s vineyards and historic mining towns. There's bungee jumping off Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge and jet-boating on the Shotover and Dart rivers. In winter, there's skiing on the slopes of The Remarkables and Coronet Peak. Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Treble Cone and Cardrona ski resorts are near the park.

🙂 Skiing. Amazing scenery!

🙁 Ski Injury!

Awoke at Queenstown campsite with a hoard of chickens and turkeys squawking for food! It was snowing hard – showered and left after breakfast. Visa processed! All clear from dermatologist – so happy! Had nachos and potato wedges – but expensive in this town. This place is dangerous for paupers …. a playground for the wealthy but NOT for the broke! LOL>

There is a bungee jump place which we gave a miss!

Set off to Wanaka up the Crown Range Road – not actually allowed in our vehicle contract! Twisty and icy! Free camped next to a lake as everything was closed!

Trent weed in bag again 🙁 -6C Very cold! Everything frozen. Views spectacular. Gave two hitchers a lift – Chuck from Truckee and Daren from Wellington. Hired snow chains which we couldn’t fit! Took Trent on nursery slopes which he enjoyed! We were such novices – lol! Note the snow plow! … and check out the sunglasses! 🙂 had donuts for breakfast! Hored skis and boots and poles…

After a glass of mulled wine we then headed on to the mountain and left Trent in a ski lesson. It was sunny and perfect but icy in patches… The first two runs were a breeze and sped down with ease … but on the third run I wiped out and dislocated my thumb! Dr Debbie from Durham gave me gas and air and popped it back in and offered me free physio therapy! LOL>Cute sign next to surgery!

Had some more mulled wine and ski’d a few more runs. Paul fell in the same spot that I wiped out! Met Trent who had come on leaps and bounds in his lesson and had really enjoyed his ski. I had physio at 19h00. The lady who did my physio had worked n west Street in Durban for 6months! Small world. Then we took Trent’s bag and washed and tumbled dried it ten times! This is costing a fortune! Had dinner at Ripples which was DIVINE. Shared pumpkin and orange soup – yum; Rump steak and veg; Fruit crumble and kahlua coffee – what a treat.
