Zambia: Victoria Falls, Devils Pool

Devil's Pool is adjacent to the famous Livingstone Island situated on the edge of the Victoria Falls. Guests can choose to enjoy an exhilarating swim to the edge of the falls during their Livingstone Island visit. The Devil's Pool is usually open between mid-August and mid-January - depending on Zambezi water levels. The spot is said to have been given its name from the Leni Lenape, an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands who believed Devil's Pool to be an interface between good and evil.

Today was a very exciting day – the long anticipated trip to Devil’s Pools!

Victoria Falls vies with Kilimanjaro as Africa’s most awesome natural landmark. It is the world’s largest sheet of falling water. It is formed by the mile-wide Zambezi as it crashes into a 105m/345ft-deep precipice on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border. Flowing at up to 500,000 cubic metres/110 million gallons per minute, it kicks up a 500m/1,640ft-high rainbow-tinted spray alluded to in its local name Mosi-oa-Tunya (Smoke that Thunders).

Devil’s Pool is on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. It stands almost midway across the mile-wide waterfall, close to Livingstone Island. It is accessible only on guided boat tours operated by Tongabezi Safaris. These leave from a launch on the Zambian bank of the Zambezi upstream of the falls. The only way to access Devil’s Pool is seasonal boat tours to Livingstone Island. These operate for seven months of the year, i.e. June to December. They include an optional dip in the pool, but only when the Zambezi is low enough to swim there safely. This is usually from mid-August to end December, with access being most reliable in October and November, when the flow is weakest.

Devil’s Pool is a natural phenomenon that’s been created by millions of years of erosion as the swirling waters of the mighty Zambezi have carved out rock pools right near the edge of the rockface. It’s assuredly the world’s ultimate infinity pool!  The view and ambiance are utterly unique and uniquely spectacular complete with rainbows built in. SPECTACULAR!

We were welcomed with a delicious drink and then headed over to the river for a quick boat ride, and then the swim across the current and into the catchment area of the pool.

We will let the photos do the talking!

We then enjoyed a good buffet lunch and a beer … the loo with a view was quite spectacular! Huge BUCKET LIST Tick! 🙂
