Thailand: Bangkok 1995

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, is a large city known for ornate shrines and vibrant street life. The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire.

🙂 Amazing food, crazy busy!

🙁 Sordid sex side which we avoided

We were up at 06h00 ready to leave Ko Tao on the arduous journey to Bangkok. The speed boat was fast and fun! We finally arrived and checked into our hotel called the New Siam Hotel.

Did a trip to the floating market which, despite our fears of being totally touristy, was actually quite fun and the food truly delicious! Damnoen Saduak has been Thailand’s best known floating market for a very long time, but that also makes it one of the most touristy ones. It’s popularity comes, in no small part, from its use as a setting in the 1974 James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun. Here you’ll discover bustling waterways, where vendors sell everything from noodles and fruit to artworks and exotic pets.

Next stop was the Bridge over River Kwai. Allied prisoners of war during World War II were forced to build the 258-mile Death Railway by Japanese forces. About a hundred thousand conscripted Asian labourers and 16,000 prisoners of war died on the whole project. Its construction came about because Japan needed another supply route to link Singapore and Malaysia to its possessions in Burma following Singapore’s fall in February 1942. Construction of the Burma-Siam railway began in October 1942 and would end in October 1943. By the end, prisoners working on the rail route weren’t calling it the Burma-Siam Railway. They were calling it the Death Railway. Workers died at a rate of 20 men per day. Quite sobering.

We also went to look at some elaborate temples.

Headed back to our hotel and had dinner and a Thai Dance dance performance. Our camera film had suffered heat damage so a bit red…

The next day we were off to the Golden Triangle – very excited!!
