Italy: Sorrento – 2021

Sorrento is a coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas, it’s known for sweeping water views and Piazza Tasso, a cafe-lined square. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys that's home to the Chiesa di San Francesco, a 14th-century church with a tranquil cloister.

🙂 Spectacular views. Limoncello.

🙁 Lost limoncello!

We left Rome and drove onwards to Sorrento … we checked into the lovely Grand Hotel President. Stunning views and lovely rooms. We went to the pool and chilled – well, we tried to … there were some Iranian boys next to us drinking bottles of whisky and smoking and playing their music really loudly – we had to move! Charlotte and Caitlyn were having a similar unpleasant encounter with a woman who kicked them out of a double chair that they were lounging on in the sun …. she told them that she had been sitting there that morning and that they had to move … and promptly sat right next to them without a mask …. I was livid and made a formal complaint to the hotel – bless them, they gave us. a complimentary bottle of Limoncillo and said that they would give the woman a formal warning as they knew exactly who she was ash she had an Icelandic passport. How unpleasant.

However the view were stunning and we were not going to let horrible people hamper our enjoyment of the stunning Amalfi coast!

The hotel offered a complimentary shuttle down into Sorrento. We told the kids to be ready at 18h00 – of course Caits and Elliott were late … and the shuttle wouldn’t wait for them – so it cost them EUR35 to take a taxi to meet us…!! We strolled around, shopped and sampled Limoncello – the family owned shop where we made our purchases were so lovely.

We enjoyed an excellent meal at Taverna Azzura – a lovely owner. Unfortunately we left our shopping bags when we left – we went back the next morning to try and find it but found our empty limoncello bottle 🙁

We enjoyed breakfast on our balcony and absorbed the beautiful views…

The next day we had a brilliant day trip to Capri.

After we got back we treated ourselves to a Michelin Star meal at Bellevue Syrene – a magnificent 5 star hotel owned by one of Ben & Charlotte’s friend’s Father. He also owns the archipelago of three islands known as Li Galli which can be seen when travelling along the Amalfi coast between Capri and Positano.  It was outstanding with the regal atmosphere enhanced by the excellent pianist. We were s touched as Ben and Elliott covered the cost of the meal – utterly gorgeous chaps. It is a cliffside villa which looks out over the waterfront and the Bay of Naples from one of Sorrento’s most privileged positions. Divine.
