THREE things we did not know about Qatar:

  1. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world. It has the 6th highest GDP per capital in the world, and the highest in the Middle East.
  2. In 2008, George Michael was the first openly gay performer to give a concert in Qatar. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and punishable by up to 3 years in prison.
  3. Camel racing is a multi-million-dollar industry centred on Al Shahaniya racetrack. Ever since child jockeys were banned in 2004, many camels are now ridden by robot jockeys.
