Ireland: County Mayo – Horsedrawn Caravan

County Mayo is on the west coast of Ireland. Its scenery ranges from verdant to desertlike, with rocky cliffs at the Atlantic coast. Clew Bay is dotted with small, steep-sided islands, including Clare Island. At the eastern end of the bay, Westport town is known for its Georgian architecture and Westport House, a mansion with dungeons. Nearby is Croagh Patrick, a mountain linked to St. Patrick.

🙁 Walking in torrential rain!

A childhood dream! I had booked a horsedrawn caravan in County Mayo, Ireland with Mayo Horsedrawn. We flew into the tiniest airport and were transferred to take occupation of our caravan and meet our horse. Unfortunately the pub in which garden we were spending our first night was closed! We were distraught as we were staving and there was nowhere else in sight. The pun landlady was so lovely – she invited us into her hoe and gave us Urish Stew – what wonderful hospitality!!

Your horse-drawn covered wagon allows you, and three other people, to sleep and cook for yourselves as you travel along the quiet roads of beautiful South Mayo, stopping overnight at farms, country houses or pubs on the way. You scarcely need any experience with horses. All you need is the willingness to learn, experience and enjoy something completely different. This is a holiday where you and your horse decide the pace.

Thank goodness we have horsey girls – they managed to tack up without any problem at all!

We set off early the next morning and enjoyed a leisurely walk through scenic countryside.

We arrived at our overnight pub stop. We untacked our horse and fed it before feeding ourselves…

The next morning was wet and windy! We tacked up and set off.

That evening we ended back at the same pub where we started and enjoyed a Guinness and played pool. Fun end to a fun weekend!
