USA: Florida – 2023

Florida is the southeasternmost U.S. state, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It has hundreds of miles of beaches. The city of Miami is known for its Latin-American cultural influences and notable arts scene, as well as its nightlife, especially in upscale South Beach. iami Beach is a south Florida island city, connected by bridges to mainland Miami. Wide beaches stretch from North Shore Open Space Park, past palm-lined Lummus Park to South Pointe Park. The southern end, South Beach, is known for its international cachet with models and celebrities, and its early-20th-century architecture in the Art Deco Historic district with pastel-colored buildings, especially on Ocean Drive. Longboat Key is a town in Manatee and Sarasota counties along the central west coast of the U.S. state of Florida, located on and coterminous with the barrier island of the same name. Everglades National Park is a 1.5-million-acre wetlands preserve on the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida. Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that are home to hundreds of animal species. Among the Everglades' abundant wildlife are the endangered leatherback turtle, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. Key Largo is an island in the Florida Keys, an archipelago off the south coast of the U.S. state. It’s a popular holiday destination where onshore and offshore state parks provide opportunities for wildlife encounters, fishing, kayaking and diving. Divers and snorkelers visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to view tropical fish and an underwater statue of Christ.

🙂 Great wedding!

🙁 Avis did not provide us with the Mustang Convertible that we reserved a year ago!

We were very excited to be returning to Florida as we had not been since 2003 – 20 years ago! We were attending our friend’s son’s wedding on the beach. We flew with BA from London Heathrow to Miami for the 9.5hour flight. .. it is exciting parking the car and using the pods! :-0

On arrival we were so excited to collect our Mustang convertible… but there was not one available … and they offered us a Camaro but no compensation grrrr….. Paul still liked the car that we did get which was a ? It was OK. Paul tells me that the Bumblebee Car from Transformers was a Yellow Camaro … but I have never seen the film!

We headed to the hotel which had to be changed at the last minutes as Hurricane Nicole had destroyed the previously booked hotel on Longboat Key….! We switched to the Fort Lauderdale Harbor Beach Marriott where they had secured really good rates. Think my Dad was saying hi with a rainbow! lol.

Paul and I had a nice meal of oysters and steak before heading for bed.

The next morning we went down for a ridiculously expensive breakfast – $33 per person – madness…. we bumped into Charlie who had been one of Trent’s best friends for years at prep school and Wellington…he had not changes! We chilled on the beach and then had lunch with Iain and Caryn (who drips in diamonds!) LOL.

It was soon time to get dressed and head over for the main event – quite lovely! The brie and bridal party looked magnificent.

We headed indoors for the celebrations to commence!

After the Speeches it was time to wear our fluorescent clothes!

The next morning we enjoyed a wonderful champagne breakfast before heading off to the Miami Beach.

It was so cool to back on Miami Beach – always takes you back to Don Johnson and Miami Vice – LOL!

We walked for miles and then headed to South Beach for sundowners. A rainstorm of epic proportion below through!

Dinner was reserved at The Bazaar by José Andrés … we hadn’t checked the dress code (!) and had to go and buy Paul trousers and closed shoes (!) …it was a tapas style with a Michelin star twist…. quite divine. I LOVED the deconstructed Key Lime Pie!

The next morning we headed to the Everglades hoping to spot some wildlife…. but the operator was not open.

So we headed to the Hilton on LongBoat key for lunch.

This is the car we should have had!

That evening we headed over to Iain and Caryn’s STUNNING apartment. The sunset was spectacular and to top it all we had dolphins playing in the ocean … beautiful.

The next morning we headed to an open Everglades tour. The airboat was fun but we did not see any manatees. There are only two everglades in the world – one in Florida and one near Noosa in Queensland, Australia. There are a lot of different species of Cypress Trees, but the ones dominating the Florida swamps are the Bald Cypress and Pond Cypress species.

Afterwards we headed for some mud crabs and a beer.

We drove on down to Key Largo. Our apartment at Atlantic Bay Resort was lovely.

Cute little apartment right on the beach.

We headed out to a recommended beach bar for dinner which was fun with live music. He even played Hotel California – the Eagles for me. 🙂

The next morning we chilled on the beach, had some lunch and then did some shopping for gifts…. and then home sweet home… it had been a blast for a long weekend … and most importantly we had missed the next hurricane which had threatened to cancel our flight!
