Indonesia: Bromo, Java

The Bromo, or Mount Bromo 7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but the most famous. The area is one of the most visited tourist destinations in East Java, and the volcano is included in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

🙂 INCREDIBLE lunar landscape!

🙁 Watching ferry crew gather rubbish into black bin bags and then tip the WHOLE lot into the ocean! 🙁

We disembarked from our boat which had been amazing with whale shark sightings and dolphins… still reeling from the horror of black bins bags filled to the top being hurled overboard into the ocean. It was a brand new ferry and the toilet seats had been broken within minutes of sailing by people squatting.

We then boarded the bus journey from hell…I have a phobia of cockroaches and could immediately hear them on boarding… Paul told me I was talking nonsense…but as soon as we departed they started emerging in their thousands from under my seat!! The bus killed a dog. The Indonesians vomited into their plastic bags for the duration of the trip leaving us nauseous and close to puking ourselves. Bus terminated in the middle of nowhere but security guards came to our rescue and directed us to the tourist office where we managed to flag down a bemo to the Crater Rim at Bromo. We were exhausted and went to sleep. Up at 03h00 and set off in the dark with Julia from Scotland and Nev from Melbourne. WOW. Spectacular. We walked the entire rim – AWEOME. The lunar landscape is incredible. Gunung Sameru and Bromo smoking. Then took a bemo to the viewpoint over the entire area – sat there mesmerised and taking it all in. We will let the photos do the talking!

The historical record indicates eruptions of Bromo every few years since 1804, and geologic evidence indicates eruptions at least several hundred years earlier. The most recent eruption occurred in 2004, and tragically killed two tourists. We followed the 6.0-mile loop trail which is generally considered a challenging route but is really fine, it takes an average of 3hrs to complete and worth every minute.

We exchanged details but Nev refused to take ours as he confessed that he was a recovering heroin addict and did not want to compromise us in case he went into remission… Shame.

This is truly one of the most spectacular landscapes that we have ever set eyes on – thank goodness for the in flight magazine which gave us the idea to visit – a MUST do.
