UK: Wales Camping Brecon Beacons New Year

The Brecon Beacons are a mountain range in South Wales. In a narrow sense, the name refers to the range of Old Red Sandstone peaks which lie to the south of Brecon. Sometimes referred to as "the central Beacons" they include South Wales' highest mountain, Pen y Fan.

🙂 Mountains. Hiking. Blizzards!

🙁 Windy! Blizzards!

An east two and a half hour drive down the M4, the Brecon Beacons is easily accessible for great walking. Paul and I first climbed Peny Fan in 1996 when I was 8 months pregnant with Charlotte and had braxton hicks contractions all the way up! Since then we walk there regularly and have camped by the little tarn many times on New Years Eve. We have seen all types of weather: Full sunshine, galeforce winds and ice and snow – Paul camped during the beast from the east!

2013: New Year!

2016: New Year!

We left home rather later than planned as we had unexpected guests the night before: Simon and Deborah – so a little hungover and only summited in the dark!

New Year’s Day was a whiteout and blizzards – what fun!

On the walk out I nearly got blown of the hill! EXHILARATING! HAPPY 2016!
