Austria: Igls

The district of Igls centers on its namesake village, a charming resort at the foot of Patscherkofel mountain, with lifts to ski slopes and hiking trails with Alpine views. The Olympia Eiskanal offers bobsled rides down a chute built for the 1976 Olympics, and the Lansersee is a small lake popular for swimming and ice skating. Cozy restaurants in villas, chalets, and mountain huts serve hearty Tyrolean dishes.

🙂 Great snow. Great company. Great skiing!

Another great trip planned by our friend with their three boys. There are few resorts with better views of a city than Igls, with its panoramic outlook over the beautiful city of Innsbruck. The ski area may be small, only numbering a few runs, but the views are incredible and the runs have some impressive history. Igls was used in both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as host for the Downhill races, one of which was won by the legendary Franz Klammer. Nowadays however, the terrain is a little more mellow, but sections of the old racetrack provide a stern challenge.

We stayed at the impressive Schloss Igls – Innsbruck, Austria. It is an old castle which also has a swimming pool which we all really enjoyed every evening after skiing. Great food and lovely ambiance. On the last night the boys had a massive pillow fight and the down went EVERYWHERE! Shirley was NOT impressed! Charlotte’s UGG boots had a dreadful smell so we left them on the balcony so as not to contaminate the room. Shirley thought that we had forgotten them and put them in her suitcase!! This made all her contents reek!! Ha! Ha!
